Tux paint is an open source drawing programme for both Apple and PC. It is really simple to use, and I found it easier to use with children than PC 'paint' - with larger icons and simple buttons. I'd love to hear how it goes if you use it with under 5 year olds, and could be a simple alternative if you don't have Kid Pix.

Hi Manda,
I use tux paint with my class of 6 & 7 year olds and they quite like it. You are right that the large buttons and icons make it very user friendly for small children. Our school loves tux paint as it's cross platform (we have both PCs and macs).
With my class however, nothing beats they joy of Kidpix (we are using Deluxe 3X) with all it's wizz bangyness and sounds! However before they knew Kidpix existed they also loved Tux Paint ;)
The other free drawing software that's quite good is Art Rage which is lots of fun, but possibly not as user friendly for children under 5.

Ooooh and if you liked Tux Paint, have you seen Tux Type yet? I have actually not used it this year with my class (it's just slipped from my thought) but it was a good enjoyable programme to get kids typing. Not sure if it would be suitable for younger kids like yours... been a while since I've used it. Anyway you can check it out here:
